The Standish Group, a recognized project management research firm, studied over 9,000 projects and reported that only 28% of projects were deemed a success, the rest had significant cost or schedule over runs, failed to deliver expected benefits or were cancelled completely?
In 1995, The Chaos Report was the first survey made by the Standish Group. This report is the landmark study of IT project failures. One key finding was that:
- 31.1% of projects being canceled before completion.
- 52.7% of projects cost 189% of their original estimates.
The CHAOS Summary in 2009 shows a marked decrease in project success rates, with 32% of all projects succeeding which are delivered on time, on budget, with required features and functions.44% were challenged which are late, over budget, and/or with less than the re quired features and functions and 24% failed which are cancelled prior to completion or delivered and never used.
